Scientists, following an unlucky teenager's sacrificial contributions, have stabilized a process called 'summoning'. This technique allows living meat to be pulled into our dimension from elsewhere at low, low costs. Summon meat, profit! 1996 is still relatively recognizable, except suburbia is made of skin and the sea is peculiarly pink.

The meat is probably a metaphor for a number of things. It's not an intentional commentary about society but during the writing process it started to feel like a bit of a parody.
